Everything drivers need to know about Rivian's electric vehicle lineup

Launching first in 2021, Rivian’s R1T full-size EV pickup truck was the very first full-size electric truck by an American automaker, beating out legacy automakers like Chevy, Ford and RAM. Riding on a skateboard platform, the truck maximizes storage space with to include areas between the cabin and bed, within the doors themselves and throughout the main cabin, demonstrating just how much space can be utilized when truck makers transition from ICE to electric.

Late in 2022, Rivian’s R1S launched with more cargo and passenger space, bringing the same extra storage highlighted by the R1T with an additional row of seats. Rivian describes their vehicles as “Adventure Vehicles” that are built for the trail just as much as they’re built for the road. The Irvine, California-based electric truck startup is blazing the trail to bring electrification to the outdoors, setting the standard for legacy automakers to modernize the single largest automotive category in the US.

Rivian's electric vehicle lineup

Rivian R1T

The R1T is Rivian’s first electric vehicle launched in North America: a full-size pickup truck built to set the standard for what an electric pickup can do in the US’s single largest automotive category. Where it really shines is in off-road capability, beating its current competitor the Ford F-150 Lightning with up to 15 inches of ground clearance using its adaptable air suspension. The Rivian lives up to its “Adventure Vehicle” designation with a plethora of accessories including different roof rack mounts, pop-up tents, and extendable kitchen stored in the bed storage amongst others.

The R1T can be configured in dual-motor AWD with either Standard, Large or Max battery options that are good for 260-400 miles of range or quad-motor AWD with a choice between Large or Max battery packs starting at 320 miles of range. Regardless of configuration, the R1T can be charged at 11.5 kW with a home charger like our JuiceBox® 48 or 220 kW with a DC fast charger with the ability to charge at over 300 kW in a future update.

Rivian R1S

Launching in late 2022, the R1S was the perfect vehicle for fans of the Rivian R1T that need more cargo and passenger space. A full-size off-roading SUV built off the same proprietary skateboard platform its R1T sibling was known for, the R1S included design features such as a hatch normal of SUVs and a 3rd row of seats. Being built off the same platform, the R1S has access to the R1T’s range of accessories that overlanding fans appreciate such as the pop-up roof tent and extendable kitchen along with its adjustable air suspension for up to 15 inches of ground clearance.

The R1S configuration options are the dual-motor AWD comes with Standard and Large battery options and the quad-motor AWD with Large battery. Unlike the R1T, the R1S doesn’t currently have a Max battery option. As both share the same platform, the same charging speeds of 11.5 kW on Level 2 and 220 kW on DC fast charging apply to this full-size off-roading SUV.

Charging Rivian EVs

Both Rivian EVs incorporate a J1772 and CCS1 Combo port on the driver’s side edge of the front bumper next to the wheel well that incorporate an LED status light for charging purposes. With AC charging, the Rivian can charge at 11.5 kW max and 220 W with DC fast charging. Similar to other EV startups, future updates can improve that as Rivian notes their goal is to bring a DC fast charging rate of over 300 kW down the road.
