How to install EV charging stations

Plug-in installation

Many stations plug into your home or office via a NEMA 14-50 electrical plug.

When hiring an electrician, request that they install a NEMA 14-50 receptacle for the rating of your JuiceBox or other JuiceNet-enabled device (typically a 40A or 50A circuit). Make sure the receptacle is installed very close to the place where you plan to mount your charging station. NEMA 14-50 input cable is about 1.7 feet long. The ground prong is furthest away from the JuiceBox.

*Recommend against GFI circuit breaker. The JuiceBox has its own internal GFCI and performs all self-test functions and meets the GFI requirement for UL certification.

Hardwire installation

If your station requires hardwired installation, ask your electrician to connect the station with a protected, NEMA-compliant junction box.

*Recommend against GFI circuit breaker. The JuiceBox has its own internal GFCI and performs all self-test functions and meets the GFI requirement for UL certification.

How do I determine if I need a plug-in or hardwired installation?

The table below should help you determine the necessary wiring for your station. Please consult with your electrician regarding the specific parts needed for your site.

JuiceBox 32 hardwire

  • 2 pole, 40A breaker1
  • #8AWG copper wire with 2 conductors and a ground. If single conductor THHN wire is used, the ground may be #12AWG per NEC 250.122 calculations2,3,4

For an outdoor installation, please add the following:

  • NEMA rated outdoor junction box with gasketed cover4
  • Shade for the unit (if mounted to the south side of a building) so it is not in direct sun, exceeding the 90°C mark

1 Recommend against GFI circuit breaker. JuiceBox performs all self-test functions and meets the GFI requirement for UL certification.

2 Please, only use the pre-installed, hard-wire whip on the bottom of the box for hard-wire applications. We cannot honor the warranty if any other holes are added to the unit. The hard-wire whip shall be used to connect to either a junction box or disconnecting means, only. It is not long enough and is not meant to go directly into the electrical panel. Do NOT drill any additional holes into the JuiceBox enclosure as it can cause damage to the PCB and/or electronics inside.

3 A fusible disconnect may be required within 6' of your JuiceNet device installation, please consult your local code.

4 JuiceBox only -The junction box will require a knockout size of 1 1/4" to accommodate the box connector for the pre-wired pigtail.

JuiceBox 32 plug-in

  • 2 pole, 40A breaker1
  • NEMA 14-50 receptacle (NEMA 14-50R)
  • #8AWG copper wire with 3 conductors and a ground. If single conductor THHN wire is used, the ground may be #12AWG per NEC 250.122 calculations2

For an outdoor installation, please add the following:

  • NEMA 14-50R outdoor enclosure
  • Shade for the unit (if mounted to the south side of a building) so it is not in direct sun, exceeding the 90°C mark
  • #8AWG copper wire with 3 conductors and a ground. If single conductor THHN wire is used, the ground may be #12AWG per NEC 250.122 calculations2

1 Recommend against GFI circuit breaker. JuiceBox performs all self-test functions and meets the GFI requirement for UL certification.

2 The neutral wire is not used, but may need to be present in the receptacle.

JuiceBox 40 hardwire

  • 2 pole, 50A breaker1
  • Junction box to wire into from the JuiceBox2,3,4
  • #6AWG copper wire with 2 conductors and a ground. If single conductor THHN wire is used, the ground may be #10AWG per NEC 250.122 calculations2

For an outdoor installation, please add the following:

  • A watertight/weatherproof junction box or enclosure
  • Shade for the unit (if mounted to the south side of a building) so it is not in direct sun, exceeding the 90°C mark

JuiceBox 48 hardwire

  • 2 pole, 60A breaker1
  • Junction box to wire into from the JuiceBox.2,3,4
  • #6AWG copper wire with 2 conductors and a ground. If single conductor THHN wire is used, the ground may be #8AWG per NEC 250.122 calculations
