After returning to North America with the Fiat 500 in 2011 after a 29 year absence, the Italy-based brand was setting its sights on North America expansion as it launched throughout Canada and the US. To meet new emissions requirements set by California, the brand electrified its 500 model exclusively for the state, entering the US EV market as one of the pioneering clean vehicles available for sale alongside other 1st generation models like the Nissan LEAF and Volkswagen e-Golf.
Fiat plans to be a fully electric automaker by 2030 and with clear plans to make a success in the US, the 500e will be joined by an expanded, electrified model-line soon enough.
Originally launched in 2013, the Fiat 500e was the brand’s first EV. Produced exclusively for the US market, the 500e was one of the pioneers of North America’s first generation EVs. Discontinued after the 2019 model year, the model makes a return to North America with a larger battery, faster 85 kW DC fast charging and vastly increased interior space on an EV-specific platform.
